چکیده
This paper explores the relative contributions made by orthography, syllabic segment, and lexical tone in the word recognition and retrieval process. It also challenges recent assumptions regarding the role of orthography and tones in mental lexicon architecture. Using an implicit priming paradigm, a word recognition experiment was conducted with native speakers of two tonal languages, Chinese and Vietnamese, that use a logographic orthography and a phonetically-based orthography, respectively. Contradicting prior findings, response time differences indicate that orthography plays a crucial role in the word recognition process, a finding that has implications for Chinese language teaching.

متن کاملLexical tone in the spoken word recognition of Chinese
Constraints of lexical tones on semantic activation in spoken word recognition of Chinese were investigated in three crossmodal priming lexical decision experiments. In Experiments 1 and 2, disyllabic compound words that shared the same segmental templates but differed in lexical tones (e.g., tiao4 yue4 vs. tiao2 yue1, jump vs. treaty, numbers indicating tone types) were used as auditory primes...
متن کاملMental Representation of Cognates/Noncognates in Persian-Speaking EFL Learners
The purpose of this study was to investigate the mental representation of cognate and noncognate translation pairs in languages with different scripts to test the prediction of dual lexicon model (Gollan, Forster, & Frost, 1997). Two groups of Persian-speaking English language learners were tested on cognate and noncognate translation pairs in Persian-English and English-Persian directions with...
متن کاملThe Contribution of Segmental and Tonal Information in Mandarin Spoken Word Processing.
Two priming experiments examined the separate contribution of lexical tone and segmental information in the processing of spoken words in Mandarin Chinese. Experiment I contrasted four types of prime-target pairs: tone-and-segment overlap (ru4-ru4), segment-only overlap (ru3-ru4), tone-only overlap (sha4-ru4) and unrelated (qin 1 -ru4) in an auditory lexical decision task with 48 native Mandari...

Recognizing Textual Entailment (RTE) is a new research issue in natural language processing (NLP) research area. RTE can be a useful component in many NLP applications. In this paper, we introduce our finding on the entailment analysis of the NTCIR-10 RITE-2 dataset, and use the observation to improve our system. In the previous works, all the input pairs are treated equally in a standard class...
